Living on the KNSM-island

In the past years a lot of the old buildings on the KNSM-island (Royal Dutch Steamboat Company) in Amsterdam have been renovated and transformed into apartments and studios. Like this stairwell to the former canteen in one of the main buildings which fed about 1,500 harbor workers a day.

The architect, together with the owners, wanted to preserve as much of the industrial feeling of the building as possible and used materials like wood, steel and glass to accomplish that.
